Why sponsor a child?
• Your sponsorship of a child supports the whole family to move beyond poverty.
• The connection a child in poverty has with you, a caring adult, leads to hope for many in destitution.
• You are playing a part in reducing poverty. The UN has ranked Ethiopia 99 out of 103 in its Human Poverty Index and the average life expectancy at birth in 2005 was 49 years .
• You may make the difference of a child having the money to pay for school uniform, which is a requirement of all students attending school, and a child not gaining an education.
How does the programme work?
You make a monthly contribution of £16 to a selected child who needs your help - this is just over 50p a day, and the equivalent of a monthly trip to the cinema for 2, or a nice bottle of wine a fortnight!
Our team in Ethiopia gives 180 birr to the parents or guardians of sponsored children each month - this amount increases for young adults who are going to university or entering vocational training.
The monthly contribution provides for the basic cost of shelter, food, a few items of clothing, educational materials and occasional medical treatment. This income insures the child will receive an education, food and, most importantly, the security of knowing they will not need to return to the streets.
Regular home visits are conducted by our staff in Ethiopia to ensure that the sponsorship money is used effectively and dependency is minimised.
As the sponsor of a child, you will receive an annual pack containing school reports, payment records, pictures and photos of your child. In addition, we encourage supporters to send packages or gifts out to Ethiopia (read about what to send as a gift to your family). Sometimes our supporters come out to Gondar to visit our office and their sponsored child, and this has always been a valuable and rewarding expereince for them.

It could not be simpler to set up sponsorship for a child in Gondar. Simply fill in the sponsorship form with your details and set up your chosen payment method. Once we have received these documents we will inform you of your child's details, and a starter pack of information will be sent to you from our team in Ethiopia.
Sponsorship of a child is just £16 per month (£192 a year), although we are always grateful if you are able to send more!
